International Student Orientation

ISP runs a new student orientation program specifically for new F-1 visa students. The International Student Orientation is mandatory; you must attend to receive priority enrollment for future quarters.  Admitted F-1 visa students can find out about registering for orientation, what to expect, and how to prepare below.

Important for All Quarters:

New Student Registration Module and CANVAS

De Anza uses a program called Canvas for online classroom. Depending on your instructor, it can be used for lectures, assignments, quizzes, discussions with your classmates, and more.

Tips for new students:

  • Canvas learning platform is a very useful tool to learn how to register for classes and what classes new, first time students should be choosing for their first quarter at De Anza. Be sure to click “Enroll in Course” and then click on: “Go to the Course.”
  • As a new student, we ask that you review the ISP modules on Canvas.

Assessment Video

Please review the Assessment explainer video for information on Math and English Assessment. You can also watch the slideshow.

Academic Counseling

  • We highly recommend taking the assessment and attending the workshops listed on this page before meeting with the ISP counselors.
  • For assistance in selecting classes during your first quarter, feel free to drop in and speak with an academic counselor without an appointment.

Full-time Enrollment and On-Campus Course Requirement

International F-1 visa students who will be studying from inside the U.S. MUST enroll and complete certain units in each quarter in order to maintain their immigration status in the U.S. Plan accordingly:

  • In summer quarter: minimum of 6 units of in-person/hybrid courses for new students ONLY.
  • In fall, winter and spring quarters: minimum of 12 units
    • Please note:
      1. Only one online class counts toward the 12-unit requirement each quarter.
      2. Hybrid classes (that include both online and on-campus instruction) are treated as on-campus classes.
      3. An easy formula to remember. Take 8 or 9 units of on-campus or hybrid classes. The rest of your units can be online.

Failure to comply will result in the termination of your F-1 status.

Deadline to Drop Classes

  • If you decide you will not attend De Anza college, you must drop all of your classes by the due date as set by the college.
  • You’ll find the deadline for your class in MyPortal under “View Your Class Schedule.”  This is solely the student's responsibility.
  • Failing to drop a class before the DUE date means you MUST pay for the tuition. There is no exception to this rule. The ISP office cannot drop classes for you.

Health Insurance

  • Health Insurance is mandatory for all F-1 visa students who will be studying from inside the U.S.  At time of class registration, all students will be charged a fee of $552 for health coverage. If you will be studying from OUTSIDE the US, we will send you instructions on how to waive your health insurance fee at a later date.
  • If you have any inquiries regarding De Anza health insurance, feel free to get in touch with Ines Johnson, via email at johnsonines@deanza.edu.

Health Requirements for International Students (TB & MMR)

All F-1 visa students who will be studying from inside the US have to meet De Anza Health requirements:

  • Proof of a blood test for tuberculosis – must be administered within the previous year
  • Proof of immunity for measles, mumps and rubella (MMR)
  • Please note, if you don't submit the required documents, the college may place a registration hold on your student records, which will prevent you from registering for classes or obtaining your diploma.
  • De Anza Student Health Services will host an on-campus Vaccination Event for international students. Detailed information can be found in ISP Event Calendar.
