• Adding and Dropping Classes

  The deadline to add or drop a class in fall, winter or spring is usually the second Saturday after the quarter begins. This is the last day you can drop a class with a refund and no record of a grade. 

  • Remember that you must remain enrolled in at least 12 units per quarter, to maintain your F-1 visa status.
  • If you drop a class after the first two weeks of the quarter, you will receive a "W" and the course will not count toward your 12 units.
  • You should always consult with an International Student Programs counselor or adviser before you drop a class.

• Paying Tuition and Fees

  Students attending on an F-1 visa must pay their tuition and fees by the second Friday of each quarter –  except for summer session, when payment is due at the time you register.

  • You can pay online through MyPortal, by mailing a check, or in person at the Cashier's Office – across the hall from the Bookstore in the Registration & Student Services Building.

  • International Payments - Flywire: De Anza has partnered with Flywire to accept payments from international students worldwide. Easily and securely pay your tuition in your own currency using local payment methods, including bank transfer, debit/credit cards, or other local payment options depending on your country.  

  How to Pay Using Flywire:

  1. Log into MyPortal to access your bill.
  2. Click the “Apps” tab and choose the “International Payments – Flywire” icon.
  3. Choose your country from the list and follow the instructions to submit your payment.

  **Important reminder: you will not be able to pay for your bill until you have registered for classes and you cannot prepay for future charges. Please allow 2 business days for your payment to post to your account. Options include bank transfer, debit/credit cards, e-wallets, or other local payment options depending on your country. (include screenshot of the button from MyPortal) Payment Support: Flywire offers 24X7, multilingual customer support via live chat and email at help.flywire.com, or by local and international phone numbers at flywire.com/company/call-us If you did not use Flywire as your payment method, and you have questions, please contact the De Anza Cashier's Office.

  • De Anza does not accept wire transfers for payment.

• Academic Counseling

  Students attending on an F-1 visa should see the academic counselors in the International Student Programs office. 

  • Read these Counseling Guidelines to learn how our Counselors can help you.

  Check the ISP Counselors webpage for information about office hours and using our online appointment scheduler.

• Taking More Than 21.5 Units

  You must get approval from an ISP counselor if you plan to take more than 21.5 credit units in a quarter.

  • If you need an Add Code to get into the class, you may obtain the Add Code from the instructor before you see the ISP counselor for approval.

• Changing Your Major 

  You can register for classes in your preferred major at any time, but you must meet with an ISP counselor to officially change the major listed on your I-20 Form.

  • You must wait until after your first quarter at De Anza before you can officially change your major.

• Using Your Health Insurance

  Your health insurance card will be mailed to you within the first two weeks of each new quarter. If you don't receive your card, come to the ISP office with your  student ID card to request a new insurance card.

• Visiting Home or Traveling Outside the U.S.

  Before you travel outside the United States, you must follow the steps listed on the Travel Outside the U.S. webpage.

  Remember there are hundreds of requests to travel during winter break and summer, so make sure you have met the requirements as early as possible, to ensure that you have the necessary signature in time for your departure.

• Extending Your I-20 Program End Date

  You can request an extension of up to six months if you are not going to complete your degree or transfer requirements before the "program end" date listed on your I-20 form.

  • You will need to make a 30-minute appointment with an ISP counselor, who will review your academic progress.
  • Do not wait until the last minute to request an extension!
